*sigh* time to rant again [11 Apr 2008|03:35pm]
[ mood | depressed ]

*sigh* time to rant again.
I'm probably a little late to this subject, but an obnoxious email from my uncle prompted me to bring it up again. This subject makes me kind of angry. And that subject is the media firestorm over Jeremiah Wright (Obama's pastor/friend.)

Also my fault for watching the "O'Reilly Factor" over Easter weekend with my brother while we were in Beaumont, which actually had this incredibly racist headline: "What's really going on inside of America's black churches?" complete with stock footage of the interior of some random black church.

Where do I begin?

A.) Rev.Wright/Trinity Church is/are not racist! Why is it SO FUCKING HARD for white people to accept the fact that nonwhites have had an entirely different world view throughout American history, and acknowledging this fact does not make one a racist against white people. History matters, godammit, and this is why the word "honky" will never be as offensive as the word "n*****."
Wright states: "And the United States of America government, when it came to treating her citizens of Indian descent fairly, she failed. She put them on reservations...When it came to treating her citizens of African descent fairly, America failed. She put them in chains, the government put them on slave quarters, put them on auction blocks, put them in cotton field, put them in inferior schools, put them in substandard housing, put them in scientific experiments, put them in the lowest paying jobs, put them outside the equal protection of the law, kept them out of their racist bastions of higher education and locked them into positions of hopelessness and helplessness." Ummm...are we not in agreeance over this indisputable fact?
ANd yeah, he said some nutty stuff (like about AIDS, and he certainly wasn't the first one to ever say this,) but most of the things he is talking about are inconvenient truths. Saying that may not make me very popular, but seriously.

B.) Why can't somebody critisize this country without being called unpatriotic/unAmerican/blahblahblah whatever else. I'm sorry this is just so fucking childish. The USA is great in some ways, horrible in others. What's so wrong about pointing this out? We have enacted oppressive policies, supported oppressive regimes in other countries, and have certainly spread our own brand of terrorism, we just don't call it that. What we're doing in Iraq right now is just the latest example. And no, I'm not going to sit here and give you a history lecture, you need to do your own fucking education. Read. For fuck's sake America, please learn your own history.

C.) Since when did somebody have to renounce friendship with someone just because he has some unpopular beliefs?

D.) Where was the outrage when Falwell (one of the biggest assholes of all time) said this after 9/11?
"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'"

I have a lot more to say on this, but I'll stop there. I just wish for once there could be an honest and open discussion about this without white reactionaries pointing their fingers and screaming "racist." So typical.

Last night I woke up screaming. Actually, Cerri woke me up, saying that I had been screaming. It was around 5:00 a.m. I had a nightmare that I'd been in this house, with my sister. We were staying up late, talking and watching TV or something, when we heard some weird noise outside the door. When I tried to open the door, it wouldn't. I finally forced it open, and there across the hall was a dark room, and in it a dark form, vaguely in the shape of a person that I couldn't make out. For some reason this "ghost" terrified me. I had been screaming to scare away the thing, whatever it was. That's when I woke up.

In other news, I finally gave my journal a new look. Of course, there's no guarantee that it'll stay that way.

I'm sorry, but this whole Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake thing is getting on my last nerve. I wouldn't even be saying anything but for the fact that the media is still making a huge deal about it, and Viacom and MTV, and whoever else, are apologizing. I would just like to say...

It's...a...breast.

A breast, people, not the end of the world. Honestly, if I hear one more thing about this "disgrace," I am going to scream. In Europe, they don't even fuzz out bare breasts on television, they way we do here. We're so uptight, it's insane. Is the female body really so offensive?

Just had to get that out of my system.

The Wild Rose
Random Brutal Love Dreamer (RBLDf)

Colorful, but unpicked. You are The Wild Rose.

Prone to bouts of cynicism, sarcasm, and thorns, you excite a certain kind of man. Hoping to gather you up, he flirts and winks and asks you out, ultimately professing his love. Then you make him bleed. Why? Because you're the rare, independent, self-sufficient kind of woman who does want love, but not from a weakling.

You don't seem to take yourself too seriously, and that's refreshing. You aren't uptight; you don't over-plan. Romance-wise, sex isn't a top priority--a true relationship would be preferable. For your age, you haven't had a lot of bonafide love experience, though, and this kind of gets to core of the issue. You're very selective.

The problem is them, not you, right? You have lofty standards that few measure up to. You're out there all right, but not to be picked up by just anyone.

"You're never truly single as long as you have yourself."

ALWAYS AVOID: The Bachelor

CONSIDER: The Vapor Trail.

I didn't like my first answer (The Sonnet.) I don't really think I'm a very "romantic" person. This one fits me a better.
On the whole though, I thought the questions sucked. "Always scientific, always accurate," my ass.

Last night was great. I hung out with Hang and Caleb in Austin. We went to see the miniature white house thing at LBJ,and then ate at Hang's mom's restaurant (Cathy's Steakhouse) for free! I haven't seen Hang since New Years, and I've really been neglecting to call her lately.

I've avoided writing my History paper long enough...so that's probably what I should be doing now...

Drawings... [06 Feb 2004|11:10am]

I drew these awhile ago, but only recently got the chance to scan them.

This is a cartoon version of me that I did last year. Why I chose to draw myself dressed that way, I'm not really sure...

So I have an assignment due on Feb. 9, in which I have to write a paper on my "favorite song of all time" for a Sociology class, print out a biography of the artist, the lyrics, and write about how it reflects the times, and why it's my favorite. Right now I'm just wondering how I'm supposed to choose one song. At first I considered something by the Beatles or Bob Dylan, but now I'm seriously thinking about doing a folksong. That'll be a little bit more difficult since there probably won't be one artist. But it'll have to do. Most of my favorite songs are old folksongs anyway. I'll probably end up doing an Irish one, like "Rising of the Moon" or "The Minstrel Boy." I'll have to think about that one.

Wow. Lord of the Rings won Best Picture and Best Director last night at the Golden Globes. It's about time! Hopefully the Academy will follow that lead.

All weekend my roommate Cerri and I stayed up really late coloring. Yes, coloring in coloring books. But they're not just any coloring books. They were Medeival, and Renaissance Fashions, by artist Tom Tierney. Detailed shite. So needless to say, it's addictive. Yeah, we're dorks. So what?

I finally gave my journal a new look. It was about time.

This semester is the worst. 17 hours, and then graduation. Boy was I an idiot for taking only 9 hours last semester. How the hell did they let me get away with that?

Last night was so crazy. Cerri, Jessie, and I all went to "Wally World" (Walmart), and ran around like imbeciles. We rode bikes around, looked at the toys, even bought some clothes. We were there until 1:00 a.m. Yup, that's what poor college kids do for fun. Riding a bike that was too small for me...that had to be the highlight of the evening.

I finally got some of my art scanned. And it's Lord of the Rings art! Okay, so it's mostly hobbit art. But I can't help it. I love drawing the hobbits.

This is Frodo. Sadly, the scanner just doesn't do the color justice.

Weird. I tried to create a second journal just now. I copied and pasted all the information in my current userinfo into my new one, and now everything's seems to be messing up. My pictures on my userinfo are not showing. So I deleted my new one, since they keep getting mixed up. What the hell did I do?

Then again, it might just be the image hosting I used.

But still, why did livejournal keep getting my two journals mixed up? Can you not have two simultaneously? Oh well.

In other news, I watched The Two Towers again last night, because I hadn't yet seen the special edition with added scenes. It was great. With or without the scenes, it's a spectacular film. I'll never understand why it was so ignored by the Academy. All the performances are top notch, and the scenery, music, story, and everything else is perfect, down to the very end of the film.

::fangirlish moment approaching:: The part in Gondor when Frodo is holding Sting to Sam's throat, and he's saying "It's me Mr. Frodo. Don't you know your Sam?" The look on his and Frodo's face, and then Frodo's wistful sigh that follows. Beautiful. And of course I love the part where Sam and Frodo are talking at the end, and Frodo says "What about Samwise the brave? I want to hear more about him. Frodo would not have gotten far without his Sam." Something like that. It gets me every time.
